I was humbly surprised when I woke up this morning to learn that PJ has indeed decided to play another season with the Galway senior football team. I for one, welcome the move.
Joyce has been suffering from an Achilles injury for some time now and he has stated that he is happy with his progress and should be back training with Galway in the coming weeks. Its a big lift to Alan Mullholland in my opinion, not only will he be a boost to our attack but the younger players around him will hopefully learn from him. This can only be achieved by those experienced and young players getting game time together.
Many might argue that the decision for him to commit another year is wrong and that the young lads should be left at it, its a fair point of view. But what he can bring to this team is much more than football ability, he can act as a mentor to those younger places and they will lift their game when he plays. A prime example to my conclusion is the National League game in Armagh last years, coming into the game Galway where struggling badly with 5/6 defeats on the bounce. His return that day gave Galway the edge and we went onto win that tricky assignment, convincingly.
He may be 34 years old, but lads, if you have to ability to play, age shouldn’t be an obstacle. Welcome back PJ!
