Galway maintained their 100% record in this seasons FBD league with a fine 2-09 to 0-05 win over Leitrim. A game played in foggy conditions in Ballinamore where Galway where on top from the outset, of course the game was in doubt of not going ahead at all, only for referee Martin Duffy giving the go ahead and the game started. The tribesmen took the lead in the 8th minute when Nicky Joyce kicked over his 1st point of the day, he later in the half added a further 1-3 to leave Galway 1-04 to 0-02 points up at the break. Galway went on to win the match well in the end against a poor Leitrim showing, Paddy Kennedy got the second goal for Galway while Joyce added two more points, along with Bergin, Eoin Concannon and Clancy getting one point each.
Its well worth noting that Nicky Joyce is in good form at the moment, granted he is not really tested at this time but its good to see him in scoring form and only conceding 5 scores in the entire match suggests that the Galway defence is playing well but then again the Leitrim forward line was not the strongest. Although I was not present at the game, I’ve been told that Galway performed well and where in control from the off. A good sign!
Elsewhere there was bad news for the Gaeltacht folk when Naomh Anna Leitir Mor where beating by Cookstown of Tyrone in yesterdays All Ireland intermediate semi final. Many people stated that this Tyrone side where just too much for the Leitir Mor men who had a very strong forward line, with Owen Mulligan in there it was always going to be tough. There was just two points in it in the last few minutes thanks to a couple of frees by Paddy O’Flaherty before Cookstown got another goal which left four points in it, in the end. Hard luck to Naomh Anna, they had performed well during the provincial series and did Galway proud. Lets hope Corofin can fly the flag for Galway in the club championship now!
