The thaw is well and truly in its element now. No sooner do we hear of the relief in sight, we hear of the flooding thats on the way, will we ever get away from this doom and gloom?. It is indeed playing havoc with the preparations for the Galway seniors as they venture in the for the new season under Joe Kernan. The Armagh man yesterday named his squad for the upcoming FBD League.
With no less than 8 new faces, it is a signal of intent from Kernan as he puts the last touches in place for the squad as they venture into a new year of football. The 1st event for the squad to be showcased is Tuam Stadium this Sunday where the Tribes come up against Galway native : Kevin Walsh’s Sligo team. The squad will be missing some notable absentee’s for the FBD competition which include several members of the Corofin squad, most notably Damien Burke who will be away on Club duty until his club interests end. Other players who miss out on pre-season are big names such as Padraig Joyce (who is recovering from injury), Cormac Bane, Claregalway man Barry Cullinane & Finian Hanley. New faces are in though, most notably former Galway All Star Seán Og DePaor’s younger brother Cillian and 2007 all Ireland minor winner Michael Martin who has been impressive with Cartoon in the past few years with his fantastic scoring ability. The squad is composed of trail matches that took place before Christmas which gave Joe an insight to what he will be deal with for the coming weeks. One concern however will be the lack of time this current squad have trained together, since the 2 month break, they havent been doing much on the field due to the weather conditions which is truly out of their hands. Another point to ponder is the inclusion of Declan Meehan who some believe he is way past his prime and should be omitted from the squad. The full squad is in full bellow which contain the usual names of Nicholas Joyce, Michael Meehan, Joe Bergin & Niall Coleman.
Also before I go, I feel that Corofin man Kieran Comer should be included in the next squad, he has been paying great football since he came back from injury this year which was topped of by a scintillating performance in the Connacht Club final. If he could reproduce his form on the county scene he would be a fine asset to the Galway squad.
